What is image masking? Why do you need it?
Image masking is the process of graphics software software like Photoshop to hide some parts of the image and reveal some parts. It is a non-destructive process of image editing. Mostly it enables you to adjust and tweak the mask later if you need to. Often, it is an efficient and more creative way of image manipulation services.
Types of image masking
There are three main types of masking in Photoshop -
1. Layer masking
A layer mask is a type of mask that people usually talk about masking in Photoshop. We can hide or reveal parts of images or we can change the opacity of different parts of the image with the help of masking. If we change the opacity of a layer from the opacity slider of the Layers panel, the opacity of the whole image will change.
Transparency Masking 1
With the layer mask we can change the visibility of the layer. We can make any part completely invisible or partially visible. If we paint the mask black, that part of the image will be quite transparent. Meaning it will make the bottom layer / layers visible. The image will be partially transparent if we paint with any grayscale color, depending on the gray% we choose for the brush. If we choose a softer brush, the edge change will be easier.
2. Clipping mask
Clipping masks use one layer to determine another level of visibility or transparency. For the clipping mask we put a layer under the layer that we want to apply transparency. From this bottom level we control the visibility of the top level. For starters, it may seem a bit contradictory if they compare the behavior of a clipping mask with a layer mask. It looks like the clipping mask is comparing the aring lattice with the layer mask.

In the case of a layer mask, we paint using black paint on the mask to make the layer pixels invisible; But with the clipping mask we are doing the opposite. If the top layer has a few pixels in that area, the top layer will be opaque or visible. If there are no pixels in the bottom layer, the pixels in the top layer will be transparent or invisible.
3. Alpha channel masking
Each of the images has different features for cutting operations such as background removal. So different methods need to be applied. Different images require different approaches. Alpha channel masking is a slightly more complex way of masking. The above two types of masking are fairly simple. But when we need to mask hair and furry areas, choosing those areas with only brush strokes is very difficult and time consuming. If there is enough contrast between the and the budget and the background, it would be easier to apply the alpha channel masking technique.
In short, to work with this method of masking, we use the channel palette to see which channels offer the most contradictions. If it is a blue channel, we make a duplicate copy of that channel and apply layers to it to increase the contrast sufficiently. If necessary, we can paint the interior of the new blue channel black to make it completely black. Then we invert the verse to make it from white to black and from black to white. Next, we copy and paste the channel and paste it into the Layers tab to create a new layer. You can use edge and burn tools to make the edges more contrasting (make the edge fur / hair more black). Also, you have the option to apply "Color Decontinate" from the Layer> Matting> Color Decontaine menu. Sometimes you can get amazing results with this option. Before applying the color decontaminate process, it is safe to make a copy of that layer. Because, it is a destructive process. Here is a brief description of alpha channel masking to give you a little idea. Now let's see why we need masking.
Why do we need masking?
It is a non-destructive technique
Masking is a destructive process. We can later modify or fine-tune our masks whenever needed. But if we erase unwanted areas then after the image editing process it is difficult to bring those areas if we need them. The same is true if we cut off part of the way to create an image on an object or something. We cannot easily accommodate more nearby areas. Only if we want to hide the area we have cut, it is possible using masking techniques. So it’s very hard to avoid re-masking, right?
Just hide and show
As I said before, the simplest use of masking is to hide and show parts of pictures. We can give a transition effect if we use a very soft brush or gradient to mask. Sometimes, like a very bright sky, we can control the transparency of the picture fields. A very bright sky area dimmer (we can make this area semi-opaque) by just brushing with gray if we want. Of course, there are other options to achieve this, but this is the simplest and easiest technique you can choose.
To fix a picture area
It is very common that you need to edit the area of the image. For example, you want to change the color of a model's top wear. You can create a mask by making that part visible. You can then apply any changes you want; Such as color adjustment / correction, brightness / contrast adjustment, exposure correction, etc.

We can use the masking technique to remove the background of translucent of objects. This is useful for removing the background of glass type of objects. We can apply this if we need to change the background of a muslin or mesh type fabric that has a little transparency.
An advantage of clipping masks
C.S.
One advantage of a clipping mask, compared to a layer mask, is that we can show a different area by simply moving the clipped image. If we use a clipping mask we can easily tune what will appear through the mask. Otherwise, I think a normal level mask is enough for almost everyone
